Practices for Pacifying Sickness

Recovery from Cancer
A nun’s mouth cancer was cured after reciting a mantra Rinpoche had advised. Rinpoche asked for this success to be recorded in the Online Advice Book.
Rinpoche advised the nun to recite the mantra "Liberating Body, Speech and Mind" twenty-five times each day. As a result, her cancer was completely eradicated.

Tibetan Medicine, Nyung Näs and Lamrim
A student with some serious diseases requested practice advice. Rinpoche sent this letter.
My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
You need to take gurchung (Tibetan medicine): five pills. First take two pills in one day and do this for two days, then on the last day take one pill.
I checked and if you can, you should attempt to do nyung näs. That would be so good. It purifies so much negative karma collected from beginningless rebirths and obscurations, and not only that, it is a quick way to be free from samsara, and especially to develop compassion for all sentient beings and a quick way to achieve enlightenment. It is also very easy to be born in a pure land.
If you can, try to do 300 nyung näs in your life. That would be so good, so fantastic. That would be so good if you can attempt to do that.
The most important thing is to also read the lamrim mindfully from beginning to end. Read some each day, even a little bit, but read it mindfully, and anything you don’t know, you can write that in another book and discuss with Geshe-la or a student who has studied lamrim and philosophy extremely well. For you, the lamrim to study is the red commentary. This is not yet translated, but it is actually the basis of Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, therefore you can read Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand. Study this twice from beginning to end, like that.
Your main deity is Cittamani Tara. Tara is the manifestation of all the buddhas’ holy actions, to fulfill the wishes of all sentient beings.
Thank you very much. As much as possible live your life with bodhicitta.
With much love and prayers
Buddha Images and Chenrezig Mantra for Brother's Health
Rinpoche sent this message along with buddha images to an Indian man who owned a thali shop where Rinpoche had eaten a number of times. The photos were for the shopkeeper’s brother, who was having a lot of health difficulties including mental illness.

I’m sending you these pictures, so every day by looking at them your brother can put his hands in the mudra of prostration and recite the mantra that I gave you already in the restaurant—OM MANI PADME HUM and the mantra for success.
If possible recite one mala, and if not, recite half a mala, and if not, then twenty-one or something. As much as possible, continuously recite the mantra. Then a little bit later it will come out from your heart.
Don’t think this is just a picture. Think it is an actual living buddha, sending loving compassion to you and to all sentient beings, sending beams to your brother and to all sentient beings, like sunbeams totally purifying all his sickness, spirit harm, negative karma and defilements collected from beginningless rebirth due to delusion and karma.
Chronic Illness
A student had a recurrent sickness that no Tibetan or Western medicine seemed able to cure. Symptoms included very low blood pressure, headaches, weakness and tremors. Rinpoche gave this advice.
My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
It sounds as if you may need some initiation or protection by a good practitioner, as it seems that your illness could be to do with spirit harm.
According to my observation you need to have chetrul [Liberating from Harm] puja done twice for you. Maybe you can ask the Lama Gyupas from Gyume Tantric College. One of those monks can do the puja in Dharamsala—maybe the elder one, who has done a three-year Yamantaka retreat. You can ask one of them and if they have done that retreat, then it’s good if they can do the puja. It needs to be done twice for you.
You need to take the jenang of Loma Gyönma [Skt: Parnashavari; a healing buddha in female aspect].
You also need to do very strong refuge practice.
So please try this.
With much love and prayers ...
Medicine Buddha Meditation
A student asked Rinpoche for advice on how to help his grandmother who was very sick. Rinpoche recommended Medicine Buddha practice in order to benefit his grandmother and all sentient beings.

My dear one,
Thank you very much for your kind note. I suggest that you do Medicine Buddha meditation. It is very beneficial, not only for your grandmother. You can do this practice not only for your grandmother but also for all sentient beings, as you are responsible for them.
There is a small book on Medicine Buddha, but not the healing one, not that one. You visualize the seven Medicine Buddhas above the crown of your head and recite each name seven times. Then you make this request after reciting the names, “Whatever prayers I have done in the past, may they be actualized immediately to benefit all sentient beings.”
At that time, you can think of your grandmother, as well as anybody who is dead, dying or sick, or has many problems. Whoever you want to pray for or to help, you can think of that person. On top of that, think, “Whatever I pray for, may it succeed immediately.” At the end, when you finish all that, there is mantra recitation. You can recite some mantras.
If you have received a great initiation, either lower tantra or Highest Yoga Tantra, then Medicine Buddha absorbs within you. You become empty and then you become Medicine Buddha. Then recite the mantra. The mantra at the heart sends beams to hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, human beings, suras, asuras and intermediate state beings. All their negative karma and defilements are purified and they all become Medicine Buddha.
At the end, dedicate to actualize bodhicitta, in the same way that I have been leading the dedications.
"Due to the three-time merits created by me, by sentient beings and buddhas, which are empty from their own side, may I, who is empty from its own side, lead all sentient beings, who are empty from their own side, to complete enlightenment, which is empty from its own side, by myself alone, who is empty from its own side.”
At the beginning, visualize Medicine Buddha as in the Medicine Buddha practice. Generate the four immeasurable thoughts and the motivation.
“For the sake of all sentient beings, I must achieve enlightenment. The purpose of my life is to benefit others. I must free numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring them to enlightenment. Therefore, I must achieve enlightenment. Therefore, I am going to do meditation on Medicine Buddha and achieve realizations."
Then you do the short seven-limb prayer and the short mandala offering. After that, make this request:
“Due to the past, present and future merits, the three-time merits collected by numberless sentient beings, and numberless buddhas and bodhisattvas, may I be like you, Medicine Buddha, in all the lifetimes and be most beneficial to all sentient beings.
“May I be like Medicine Buddha forever and be most beneficial to all sentient beings. All sentient beings who see, hear, remember or touch me, just by that, may all their sufferings of body and mind be completely healed. May they find faith in karma and devotion to Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and may they actualize loving kindness, compassion and bodhicitta. May their negative karma created since beginningless rebirths be purified.”
When somebody is dying, dead or sick, you can do the same practice to the body.

Practices for Healing
This letter was sent to an ordained person with health issues. Rinpoche’s advice included circumambulation of Swayambunath Mountain and recitation of the long Chenrezig mantra and praise.
My most dear one,
What came out is that it is very good for you to see Khadro-la. It is very important to get treatment from Khadro-la, for her to help you.
Also, what came out best is for you to go around Swayambunath Mountain. You can recite texts while going around. While circumambulating you can recite Thirty-five Buddhas, Vajrasattva and other texts you want to recite by heart.
If you can, recite the longest Chenrezig mantra from the Mani Kabum, a text by Songtsem Gampo, the Dharma king of Tibet. Make strong prayers to Chenrezig to purify negative karma from beginningless rebirths, particularly this disease, so nectar beams emit from Chenrezig. While you recite the mantra make strong prayers.
You can recite just a few a day, twice a day, however, if you want to you can recite more. This seems most important. [Visualize] a shower of nectar beams being sent from Chenrezig to you—loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta—to you and to all sentient beings.
At the end, recite the Praise to Chenrezig by Gelongma Palmo, from the nyung nä text. (After doing prostrations there is this short praise, and you kneel down and recite it.) Do that afterwards, then make prayers to heal, and dedicate [the merits] with bodhicitta and seal with the three circles of emptiness.
