Practices for Protection and Healing

Sick Father and Pilgrimage Obstacles

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

Rinpoche gave this advice to a student whose father was very sick. The student had also asked she should do to remove obstacles to a pilgrimage.

For your father:

  • The extensive Medicine Buddha puja [The Wish-granting Sovereign] should be done twice at Land of Medicine Buddha. They can organize it and make sure it is the extensive puja.

To remove obstacles for your pilgrimage:

  • You need to recite 108 names of the Venerable Arya Tara three times every day for two months.
  • Recite Tendrel Nyesel [a short Padmasambhava prayer] to eliminate vices due to wrong dependent arising. Do this every day for one month or two months. You can do it yourself and also with other friends—they can also do it with you.

Dear doctors and staff,
This is my blessed water. I made many prayers on it. You can make more blessed water by mixing a little of this with new water, to extend it.

A little water can be given to every person that comes to the clinic and you can give more of the blessed water to those with dangerous diseases.

This not only helps them to recover from disease, but also from spirit interference, negative karma and obscurations. All this comes from negative karma, which is in the mind. This is the main cause.

Generally, in the world and in particular in the West, it is thought that disease is caused by weather, food, etc., and external things, and by action. That is kind of correct but not exactly correct. Actually, disease is caused by negative actions—that is the root cause—in particular from having harmed others, but this is not mentioned in normal education and in the treatment of where the disease came from. This is not mentioned.

Therefore, in the daily life, for any religion, not only Buddhists, but any religion, the most important thing is practicing a good heart, not harming others and helping others. Causing happiness to others is the best treatment to not arise disease, to not create disease and what diseases we have, to cure them. This is the best healing. This is proven by numberless buddhas and bodhisattvas.

Otherwise, day and night, we always create negative karma with body, speech and mind, harming others, and then the result is not only sickness, but we will have sickness like rainfall, not only in this life but in the life afterwards and in all our lives.

So, if we really desire happiness we need to practice the good heart, not harming others and benefiting others. That is the best treatment, the happiest life.

Negative karma came from wrong concepts and delusions. To normal people it seems not right but in reality, the wrong concepts, the hallucinated mind, the delusions that have been collected from beginningless times are the cause.

So, this blessed water has very deep benefits; it purifies the mind.

With much love and prayers ...

This advice was sent to a student who was experiencing a lot of health and financial problems.

Rinpoche has checked and said the situation is not easy. These are things that can help.

  • The Tengyur needs to be read by Tsum nuns, as well as by Kopan Nunnery and Monastery. This is a big undertaking, as the reading is very extensive. It is the full commentary on all the Buddha’s teachings.
  • Drugchuma puja: to be done five times by Serkong Dorje Chang and monks.

Practices to Remove a Resident Teacher’s Health Obstacles

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

Rinpoche observed that there were health obstacles for a center’s resident teacher that year, and for a student in the following year. Rinpoche advised these practices to remove the obstacles.

  • 50,000 tsa tsas of the three long-life deities, to remove health obstacles for this year. Kopan monks and nuns [can make them.]
  • 2,000 long-life tsa tsas, to remove obstacles for next year. Kopan monks and nuns [can make them]; also share them with students.
  • Amitayus Long Life Sutra (Tse do). To be recited 1,000 times by the Kopan nuns, to remove obstacles for next year.
  • 30,000 Amitayus long-life mantras, to remove obstacles for next year. If you can, maybe do a loose retreat in the morning and evening, or it can be stricter.
  • Drugchuma puja. To be recited seventy times by the Gyuto monks in Dharamsala. This is to remove obstacles for next year.
  • Golden Light Sutra. The center students can read this four times.
  • Chanting the Names of Manjushri (Jamphel Tsenjö). To be recited sixty times, to remove obstacles for next year. The monks and nuns at Kopan can do one recitation each in one sitting.
  • Recitation of the Kangyur, by the Kopan monks.

Improved Health Due to Practice

Rinpoche had advised some practices for a student with  life obstacles. After doing the recommended practices, the student’s heath improved and he felt it was due to his practice, which included more than 200,000 recitations of the four immeasurables.

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
Thank you very much your kind letter telling me how your health has improved. It is so important to practice Dharma and especially to practice bodhicitta. This becomes the cause for you to achieve enlightenment quickly and to fulfill the wishes of Lama Yeshe, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and all the buddhas and bodhisattvas. It is very, very important, so thank you very much for developing your practice. Thank you very much. I hope to see you soon.

With much love and prayers ...

PS. Sorry, you said I am bliss and voidness, but I am no different from the ants and the kangaroos—as I am in Australia now, I am a friend of the kangaroos—and the monkeys, like the Tushita monkeys or, as you remember, the Dharamsala monkeys. Sorry, I have many lifetimes to go until the bliss and voidness, but I pray for it to happen quickly. Thank you very much.
