Protection from Spirit Harm

Illness Caused by Spirit Harm
Rinpoche sent this message to a longtime student who had been sick for many weeks. Doctors were finding it hard to diagnose the illness and ascertain what medicines to give that person.
My most dear, most precious, most kind, wish-fulfilling one,
As you know, most or all diseases are related to spirit harm, which is something Western doctors don’t accept. To cure this, there are pujas without medicine and pujas with medicine, and there is medicine without pujas. For you, pujas have been done; I have done them and I am doing prayers, so slowly this condition will get better.
Anyway, rejoice. Think that this small sickness finishes the heavy negative karmas collected since beginningless rebirths, and in the future there will be happiness, like the sun shining in the world. Rejoice in your building the center. Eons of negative karma are purified by doing that.
The good news is that the self-cherishing thought that you have been following from beginningless rebirths, which created the negative karma and which harms you, is now being harmed or destroyed.
Without Dharma practice, without bodhicitta, the self-cherishing will continuously harm you. This harm to self is like a tiny atom of a building, unnoticeable. From beginningless rebirths we have harmed numberless sentient beings in numberless realms, causing them suffering up to now and in the future. This is the most frightening thing, the real enemy.
This is exactly what is needed to destroy the self-cherishing and the ignorance holding the I [as truly existing]. This is exactly what is needed to destroy the enemy. It is the best, so good. Without self-cherishing there’s bodhicitta, then enlightenment for oneself and for every sentient being. There is temporal and ultimate benefit.
Without ignorance, karma and delusion and the seeds of these are destroyed, then we become free from samsara, then it’s incredible how we can benefit sentient beings. Our obscurations are destroyed by the wisdom realizing emptiness, not by bodhicitta. So we need to have the realization of emptiness.
Generally, those causing harm to our life are the 424 diseases, the 360 types of spirit harm (Tib: don), and 1,080 interferers. Then, of course, there are 84,000 delusions, the inner harmers. Until we are free from samsara it is like this.
Until we are free of karma and delusion, it is like this, so we need to become free from samsara. Therefore, we need places like Nalanda Monastery, we need to practice the higher training of morality, the higher training of concentration and the higher training of wisdom. So, people at the monastery need to help each other do this.
This is what sentient beings need to practice. This is how to get out of samsara and of course, how to get enlightened. Thank you very much!
With much love and prayers ...
Seizures Caused by Spirit Harm
A student’s teenage daughter had suddenly started having seizures, but it was not epilepsy. Doctors couldn’t find a cause and had recommended a strong drug. Rinpoche indicated it was spirit harm.
Dear one,
Rinpoche checked and said a wrathful fire puja needs to be done. Rinpoche said this wasn’t an easy situation. Not much was coming out [in his observation] and the situation was quite difficult. Rinpoche said at this time the wrathful fire puja was coming out as beneficial.
Then Rinpoche checked again and said she should recite the mantra “Liberating the Body, Speech and Mind from Bondage” forty times. This came out best. [You can find links to the Dharani Extremely Conquering from Bondage in the FPMT Catalogue.]
108 Names of Tara: This needs to be recited five hundred times by the nuns at Drepung Monastery.
Most Secret Hayagriva gago: for her not to be harmed. This gives the order to not harm.
Rinpoche immediately started a puja for your daughter.
Update: After the pujas and practices, the girl was completely healed and three years later had not experienced any more seizures.
Difficulty Eating Food
A student was unable to eat food. Rinpoche said it was caused by spirit harm and advised these practices.
- Drugchuma puja: Three times.
- Vajra Armor mantra: Recite this seven times a day, for at least four days.
Puja for Spirit Harm
A student wrote to Rinpoche asking about spirit harm and said they had been harmed by spirits in the past.
My most, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
Thank you very much your kind letter. Just getting up early and doing a lot of practice is very good, but you should watch your mind. Don’t do like before. You should watch the mind if it is engaging in strange things, not just waking up early and doing practice. If your mind is engaging in strange things, let me know and maybe there are pujas you can do. Don’t just follow what you think.
Spirits can make us to think differently, so if we just follow them without thinking, [we may endanger] our most precious human life, which has unbelievable possibilities to learn Dharma, the four noble truths, and not only that, we have met the Mahayana, so we can achieve the path to enlightenment.
Not only that, we can achieve enlightenment in one life, without the need to collect merit in three countless great eons. Not only that, the fourth one is that we have met Maha-anuttara Yoga Tantra, which contains the quickest method to achieve buddhahood in a brief lifetime of degenerate time.
Because of that we are able to free the sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering quickly, and because of that we are able to bring every sentient being to peerless happiness, buddhahood. That is what the human body can do. It’s incredible, incredible, incredible, so precious, so precious, so precious!
Be careful not to lose this [precious opportunity]. If we totally believe our mind when it is occupied by spirits, then we might jump from a cliff or do all kinds of things during that time. This happens when the spirits cause hallucinations or make us unconscious, but we don’t recognize that.
I checked and you need to have mamo trü kang puja done by Tsawa Khangtsen [at Sera Je Monastery in south India.] Some monks at Tsawa Khangtsen can do the puja for you, to remove obstacles so you can continue to learn and practice Dharma. This is so your life can become more beneficial for sentient beings; that is the most important thing.
Thank you very much for writing to let me know, that is very wise.
With much love and prayers
Signs of Spirit Harm
This advice was for a student showing indications of spirit harm.
- He should receive ga gön from another lama.
- His father, mother and brother should read the Vajra Cutter Sutra one time each.
Vajra Armor and Multicolored Garuda
Rinpoche recommended these practices for a student who was experiencing naga harm.
The first practice is Vajra Armor. Think Padmasambhava manifests as Vajra Armor, and while you recite the mantra, request to purify all the disease, negative karmas, spirit harm and obscurations collected since beginningless rebirth.
[Make requests] to actualize bodhicitta without delay and to achieve the ultimate wisdom realizing emptiness, the essence that ceases the root of samsara. Pray to actualize the whole path to enlightenment as quickly as possible for sentient beings.
Then Padmasambhava sends white beams, loving kindness and compassion to you so that all the sickness is purified, as well as what I mentioned before (sickness, spirit harm, negative karma and defilements from beginningless rebirths) and all realizations up to enlightenment are actualized. Then recite the mantra.
The next practice is multicolored Garuda. Recite the mantra with the same visualization. Padmasambhava manifests as multicolored Garuda and emits white beams purifying the four things, including naga harm, and you receive all the realizations. Then recite the mantra twenty or thirty times.
Start both practices with refuge and bodhicitta.
Motivate not just for your own happiness but for numberless sentient beings. You are doing this practice in order to free them from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to ultimate happiness, enlightenment. Then start the practice and at the end, dedicate the merits.
