Prayers and Mantras for Success

Many Obstacles

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

This letter was sent to a student experiencing many obstacles. Rinpoche had previously suggested becoming ordained.

My most dear one,
Regarding the obstacles you mentioned, if you can, recite one mala per day of the mantra from the Sutra of Golden Light (the mantra without attachment). Also recite some mantras of the Great Increasing Jewel each day.

The motivation is for success, for your finances and for all your wishes to succeed for sentient beings, to be able to free the numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to enlightenment and for you to achieve enlightenment in order to be able to do that.

Also, when you have to time, recite the Arya Sanghata Sutra and the Sutra of Golden Light. You can do a few pages at a time or the whole sutra, but it comes out very, very beneficial to do this.

Prayer Eliminating Obstacles and Accomplishing Wishes

Date Posted:

Lama Zopa Rinpoche advised that the following prayers and mantra are beneficial for clearing obstacles.

Request in Six Vajra Lines

DÜ SUM SANG GYÄ GU RU RIN PO CHHE
NGÖ DRUB KÜN DAG DE WA CHHEN PÖI ZHAB
BAR CHHÄ KÜN SEL DÜ DÜL DRAG PO TSÄL
SÖL WA DEB SO JIN GYI LAB TU SÖL
CHHI NANG SANG WÄI BAR CHHÄ ZHI WA DANG
SAM PA LHÜN GYI DRUB PAR JIN GYI LOB

Guru Rinpoche, buddha of the three times,
Lord of all realizations, great blissful one,
Eliminator of all obstacles, powerful wrathful subduer of the maras,
I request you: please grant your blessings.
Please bless me to pacify my outer, inner, and secret obstacles,
And to spontaneously accomplish my wishes.

Mantra of Padmasambhava
OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM

Following on from the prayers above, Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises us to recite the verse Requests to Oddiyana and the Goddesses of the Four Elements from Sampa Lhundrubma to remove obstacles:

Requests to ODDiyAna and the Goddesses of the Four Elements

SA CHHU ME LUNG JUNG WÄI BAR CHHÄ KYI
GYU LÜ NYEN CHING JIG PÄI DÜ JUNG TSHE
YI NYI THE TSHOM ME PAR SÖL WA DEB
OGYÄN JUNG WA ZHI YI LHA MOR CHÄ
JUNG WA RANG SAR ZHI WAR THE TSHOM ME
OGYÄN PÄ MA JUNG NÄ LA SÖL WA DEB
SAM PA LHÜN GYI DRUB PAR JIN GYI LOB

When obstacles of the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind
Afflict and destroy this illusory body,
I make request to you without hesitation or doubt.
Oddiyana and the goddesses of the four elements,
I have no doubt that you will pacify the elements in their own place.
To the Lotus-Born of Oddiyana, I make request:
Grant your blessings that my wishes be spontaneously accomplished.

Legal and Financial Difficulties

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

This advice was given to a student who requested practices to help with legal and financial difficulties and unemployment.

My most dear, most kind, most precious wish-fulfilling one,
I am very sorry about how long it took to reply to your request and kind letter.

I checked and you should recite these two mantras, one mala a day. [Refer to page 20 of The Method to Transform a Suffering Life into Happiness (Including Enlightenment)]

Holy Name Mantra that Fulfill Wishes

Recite the homage and mantra together for each recitation:

DE ZHIN SHEG PA SA DZIN GYÄL PO LA CHHAG TSHÄL LO

To Tathagata Earth Holder King, I prostrate.

TADYATHA / OM DHARE DHARE / DHARANI BANDHE SVAHA

(108x, 54x, or 21x)

Anyone who memorizes the words of this holy name mantra will have all their wishes fulfilled.

If you can, do one mala a day of this practice first thing in the morning. That is excellent.

Then what you should do, the most important thing, is to put effort into tonglen practice. Here you need to purify all the defilements, which cause obstacles, and you need to collect extensive merits for success. This is not only for your legal and economic issues and unemployment, it is not just to solve that—that is nothing, that is just for this life. Here it means for success in all the future lives, to not be reborn in the lower realms when you die; to receive a deva or a human rebirth; to be born in a pure land and to meet the Dharma, the Mahayana tantra teachings; and in all your future lives to meet the perfectly qualified virtuous friend. Also, to be free from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and to achieve ultimate liberation. Not only that, as that is just for yourself, but to achieve enlightenment—the total cessation of all the obscurations and completion of all the realizations for the numberless sentient beings. To free the numberless sentient beings from oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them in peerless happiness—the total cessation of all the obscurations and completion of all the realizations. To have success for all these reasons. This is the most important reason to have success.

If you do tonglen practice, as I explained, it is a way to collect the most extensive merits and it is the greatest purification. This is much more important than making a billion dollars every minute of your life. Every minute of your life making a billion dollars is nothing.

Shakyamuni Buddha was the same as us; he was a suffering sentient being before. So why did Shakyamuni Buddha became enlightened before us? Because Buddha was able to cherish others and let go of oneself. We haven’t changed our mind; we are always cherishing oneself and giving up others, who are numberless. Therefore we are still suffering in samsara, even though we were the same as Shakyamuni Buddha before. Buddha let go of himself and cherished others, and achieved full enlightenment. We are still suffering because we still haven’t changed our mind. We are still only cherishing the I and letting go of others, who are numberless.

Therefore do these practices first thing in the morning, if you can. (The Method to Transform with one mala of mantras, and also tonglen). If you want to change your life this will make a huge difference. It will change your life from kaka into gold, from iron into diamond, so like that.

I checked and I am also going to do some practices for you—recitation of Arya Sanghata Sutra twice and also the Mantra Promised by Tara eight times.

Please continue to make your life most meaningful with the thought of bodhicitta day and night and in every action that you do.

With much love and prayers...

Success In Exams

Date Posted:

Rinpoche gave the following advice for a student’s daughter to be successful in her exams.

Rinpoche checked and advised the following:

  • Organize 100,000 Praises to Tara. It comes out best for the Kopan monks to do this.
  • Your daughter should do the Prayer to Manjushri each day.
  • Make light offerings to Manjushri each day. You can set up electric light offerings; if possible set up 100, then offer these every day.

Before doing prayers and practices, motivate well for your daughter’s exam, and to attain all the lamrim experience, especially bodhicitta and to never be born again in the three lower realms.

Overcoming Obstacles to Moving House

Date Posted:

Rinpoche gave the following general advice regarding overcoming obstacles to moving to a new house.

You should check a few places before deciding which house to rent. You may need to do some pujas: incense puja and a tea offering to the eight groups of worldly devas (de gyä). After moving house, recite the Heart Sutra a few times and invite Geshe Chonyi or Geshe Tenzin Zopa to do the incense puja. If you can’t find any lamas, invite the best singer or best actor to do the puja!
