The Ultimate Good Heart
A student with cancer, who was in a lot of pain, wrote to Rinpoche asking for advice. Rinpoche explained how to use the sickness to purify negative karma and develop the good heart.
My very dear one,
I am very sorry for the many eons of delay in replying to your message. I have been making prayers for you. Also, the Sangha in my house are continuing to do practices and prayers for you.
It comes out very beneficial for you to take two Hayagriva torma pills each day for three months. I can send these to you if you email me your address. These pills are made from the torma that I used in retreat.
Then, it comes out very beneficial for you to do the practice of Chenrezig Sangita. It is very good if you can do this practice every day and recite a few malas. This practice is for very strong purification. Visualize beams of nectar emitting from the deity and entering your body and mind, purifying you of all sickness, spirit harm, negative karma, and defilements. Also, you can think that beams of nectar enter all other sentient beings and purify them. In the beginning, focus mainly on purifying yourself, then, at the end, for maybe the last half mala or mala, focus on other sentient beings.
If you can, try to use this heavy sickness to purify many years, lifetimes, eons of heavy negative karma, which causes the suffering of the lower realms.
The second most important method is to experience this sickness as a way of developing bodhicitta, the ultimate good heart—cherishing and benefiting others—by thinking, “I have received all sentient beings’ suffering of this kind, and all the rest of their problems—that means oceans of sufferings of all sentient beings of the six realms—even the subtle obscurations of the arhats and bodhisattvas. I experience all this suffering for sentient beings.” This means liberating sentient beings from all suffering and letting them have all happiness, from temporary happiness up to enlightenment. Try as much as possible to think in this way.
With much love and prayers ...
