Reincarnation of Spiritual Teachers

Recognition of Lama Lhundrup’s Reincarnation
Rinpoche sent this message following the announcement that His Holiness the Dalai Lama had officially recognized the three-year-old Tenzin Rigsel as the reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche Lama Lhundrup Rigsel, the former abbot of Kopan Monastery.
My dear students seeking total elimination of suffering and completion of buddhahood, and my dear friends,
This news is so great and encouraging to our minds, to develop Dharma wisdom and compassion to all sentient beings, whose minds are obscured and suffering, and to help with our body, speech and mind, and bring perfect peace and happiness in this world, at least.
This is just about one time that we have received this perfect human rebirth and met the Buddhadharma, with the opportunity to learn and practice and to overcome the oceans of samsaric sufferings, by overcoming delusion and karma—including laziness, not laziness towards removing suffering and its causes, but laziness in Dharma practice and achieving enlightenment.
This is to inform you the ex-abbott of Kopan Monastery, Lama Lhundrup, who is heart disciple of Lama Yeshe, who is kinder than all the three-time Buddhas, including Buddha Vajradhara. Lama Lhundrup was invited by Lama Yeshe to look after Kopan Monastery and was the principal teacher of the monks and nuns, giving advice and looking after the Dharma discipline. Then after Lama Yeshe showed the aspect of passing away, Lama Lhundrup looked after the finances and with all his heart and life he looked after Kopan Monastery. It was from Kopan Monastery that FPMT started. Lama Lhundrup also dedicated and put effort into developing Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings in Kopan and in all of Nepal.
Now Lama Lhundrup has been recognized by Buddha Chenrezig, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who said “Tenzin Rigsel to be recognized as a reincarnation of the late Lhundrup Rigsel comes out extremely positive.”
What made Lama Lhundrup have this special reincarnation was his pure morality, compassion to sentient beings and wish to liberate all sentient being by spreading the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa. I think this incarnation will be continually more and more beneficial as his life goes on and also as his lives go on.
Please everybody enjoy, especially the students in the East and the West.

A Special Child
A student wrote to Rinpoche asking if her son was an incarnate lama. She described the visions and experiences that occurred when she was pregnant, including dreams of an elderly monk, Trulshik Rinpoche; the spontaneous smell of flowers; a vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama; ghosts, then a snow lion, and an experience of emptiness. She decided to become a Buddhist after reading Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life. Rinpoche gave this advice.
My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling Hannah,
Thank you very much for your kind letter. It shows that your son is definitely some incarnation, some holy being or something like that. Yes, some holy being.
Here in this case, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be informed and will check. Who takes the most responsibility is His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Sometimes even if His Holiness is not informed, he can see that the incarnation is born.
Now that the child is born, he will gradually show more special signs, so you have to check for that. If there’s anything special, let me know. I am a listener to the good things and to all personal problems, so don’t feel shy about expressing anything to me.
Please continue to make your life more beneficial to the numberless sentient beings of the six realms with a good heart and, if possible, with bodhicitta. Meditate, study Dharma, eat, walk and sleep with that, to free them from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring them to happiness, including enlightenment.

Lama Yeshe’s Relics
In August 1984, Rinpoche wrote the following letter and sent two envelopes with Lama Yeshe’s relics.
Thank you very much for your hard work. Especially during my retreat I dedicated merit to you and all students. Thank you very much for your letter. I am sending some relics of Lama for yourself and the center. Please give my love to ___. I will be going to Dharamsala in a few days, but am not sure what will happen after that.
Please continue to make the life meaningful with bodhicitta day and night, and also keep watching the basic root vows.
Lama will reincarnate soon. We have done many pujas and have been checking and will continue to check through lamas and deities. So, sooner or later we can have big parties for Lama’s reincarnation.
With much love and prayer...
Teacher Passes Away
Rinpoche sent the following advice to a Dharma center after the resident teacher passed away.
Dear Institute Director, most dear Nina, kind dear members and students,
My letter is not meant to disrespect Geshe-la, who showed the path to enlightenment especially to the Italians. His qualities included being learned and goodhearted, and his life was a great example of the Vinaya. He was always very inspiring to his students and others, and his students never complained about him. He was very sincere and like a father, solving everyone’s problems. He showed incredible kindness to the center and the FPMT, as well as to Lama Yeshe and me.
Now we are looking for Geshe-la’s incarnation, and we are also trying to create the cause for that. The continuation of the Master’s Program is very important, and we have a great teacher coming to teach: Khensur Rinpoche Jampa Tegchog.
Khensur Rinpoche needs a place to stay, and I think it is good for him to be in Geshe Jampa Gyatso’s room. We cannot keep the room empty forever. Of course, once Geshe-la’s incarnation is educated then he can stay at the center, but now the room is needed for Khensur Rinpoche. Please understand this. Thank you very much. Each time a teacher passes away we cannot leave a room empty.
I think everyone will enjoy Khensur Rinpoche’s teachings. Everywhere he has taught before, the people are very happy. I wish everyone a happy, healthy and very long life.
With much love and prayers...
Recognition of Tulku
Rinpoche gave the following advice to a person who had been recognized as a tulku.
Dear Lee,
I recently had a discussion about your enthronement. I think if you would renounce the householder’s life and become a monk, then you could be of great benefit to sentient beings, especially to Chinese society and even more so, to mainland China.
As you know, the most important thing is your motivation of great compassion for sentient beings—bodhicitta. Then, spread the teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa.
With love and prayer...
Incarnate Lama
The following is a letter from Rinpoche to Hardong Khangzen at Sera Je Monastery, regarding an incarnate lama.
This letter is to explain the following matter mainly to the sublime Geshe Drukda, who is endowed with loving kindness and incomparable kindness, and all the students of the Hardong Khangzen.
The incarnate lama, Lobsang Tenzin, who is incarnation of the 91st Ganden Tripa, checked with dreams about the child, Tsering Tharchin. He dreamed that outside Tsering Tharchin’s home there are two trees, and two khatags were trying to go in through the window of the house.
Also, in my observation it came out very well that this child is the incarnation of Geshe Thubten Tashi.
So, this is to explain that the principal, main objective for looking for the incarnation of the teacher is to be of benefit to the teachings, Buddha, and sentient beings, and to make the child pure in morality (having subdued, peaceful conduct) and good-hearted. On that basis, then he should study the extensive scriptures of the Buddha.
So, this is my request.
I, Thubten Zopa, having the name of incarnation, offer this with a prayer.
