Eye Conditions

Dear one,
When my mother became blind, I was invited for lunch by Cherok Lama’s past life, who was very old, like a long-life man, with a white beard and body hair. He was supposed to be blind, but I was sitting on his bed and he said “Oh, you look good.” So I think maybe he was able to see a little bit.

Anyway, regarding my mother having an operation, he said, “What is the use of having an operation? What is the use? Just recite mantras. Why do you need an operation? Just recite OM MANI PADME HUM.” He thought an operation was not important. Amazing! He thought the operation was not important and he said to just recite OM MANI PADME HUM all day. His way of thinking is the real Dharma way of thinking—not to worry about the operation and just to practice Dharma.

My mother didn't know much, she couldn't read the alphabet, but she did have the operation and afterwards when she saw Ngawang Samten [Rinpoche’s sister], she said, “Oh, you have become fat.” Of course, my mother had helpers.

Recite Chenrezig mantra, the middle-length one, which starts with NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA.... Think Chenrezig and His Holiness the Dalai Lama are one, the same, so Chenrezig sends beams, they hit you and totally purify all your sickness, spirit harm, negative karma and defilements collected from beginningless rebirths, and particularly the eye disease. Think it is gone completely. Recite this mantra every day and continue like that, with this healing and also purification. I will send some more mantras later; I will check for you.

Rinpoche has been doing prayers for you.

There is a practice for you to do called The Method to Open the Eye with Chenrezig which Rinpoche has translated. You can also visualize the seed syllable. I am not sure if this will be possible due to your eyesight but maybe someone can print it out and raise the edges so you can feel the seed syllable to know the shape. Rinpoche drew this syllable for you.

In addition, take the precious pill Rinchen Mangjor. Take one every second day for eight days. That means you take four pills in total.

If you do che trul [Liberating from Harm] puja and Four Mandala Offerings to Tara, then having the eye operation is very good.

Another option through practice is to do the following:

Turning the prayer wheel, visualize Chenrezig. Light is emanating from Chenrezig, purifying your eye disease and purifying all the harms and the disease completely. After several malas [of the Chenrezig mantra, OM MANI PADME HUM], then visualize that all sentient beings are purified. Focus strongly and think that all the four things—negative karma, sickness, spirit harm and obstacles—are completely purified.

My most dear, most kind, most precious wish-fulfilling one,
I am sorry for the delay in replying to your question. I checked and there is one practice, a meditation based on Chenrezig, I have to find the text and get it translated for you. This came out very good for you.

Of course, the prayer and your purpose is not just for healing the eye disease and obstacles, but also for purification and for your whole life to be most beneficial and meaningful for numberless sentient beings—for every sentient being, every hell being, every hungry ghost, every animal, every human being, sura, asura and every single intermediate state being, every mosquito and every maggot.

The idea is to pray like that. On the basis of correctly following the virtuous friend and remembering bodhicitta and right view, and if possible, understanding the tantric path— generation stage and completion stage—in order to achieve enlightenment in this life and if not, then to be reborn in a pure land when you die and achieve enlightenment there.

I checked and it comes out best if you can recite the long Chenrezig mantra that is in the nyung nä text:

NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA NAMAH ARYA JNANA SAGARA VAIROCHANA VYUHA RAJAYA TATHAGATAYA ARHATE SAMYAKSAM BUDDHAYA NAMAH SARVA TATHAGATEBHYAH ARHATEBHYAH SAMYAKSAM BUDDHEBHYAH NAMAH ARYA AVALOKITESHVARAYA BODHISATTVAYA MAHASATTVAYA MAHAKARUNIKAYA TADYATHA OM DHARA DHARA DHIRI DHIRI DHURU DHURU ITTI VATTE CHALE CHALE PRACHALE PRACHALE KUSUME KUSUME VARE ILI MILI CHITI JVALAM APANAYE SVAHA

It is very good to memorize this mantra if you can. Recite the mantra and make strong prayers to Chenrezig. Think that Chenrezig is His Holiness the Dalai Lama; that they are one.

Also, it is very good for you to recite His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s name mantra:

OM AH GURU VAJRADHARA BHATTARAK MANJUSHRI VAGINDRA SUMATI JNANA SHASANA DHARA SAMUDRA SHRI BHADRA SARVA SIDDHI HUM HUM

It’s very good to also memorize this mantra.

Make very strong prayers, then after you recite the mantra—or both of these mantras if you can, doing one mala or whatever you can manage—blow over a jar of water. Then you can drink the water, sipping a little throughout the day or put a very soft cloth, for example, soft cotton, in the water and wipe it over your eyelids.

While doing this think, “May all the obscurations and negative karma of all beings’ blindness be gone.”

Each time you wipe your eyelids or sip the water, continue like this.

Make strong prayers to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to heal the blindness and to be able to see all the past, present and future phenomena, to have the omniscient eye, and for oneself to achieve the state of omniscience and to be able to free all sentient beings from the oceans of sufferings, to free them from all the sufferings and bring them to buddhahood.

Pray like that. Each time you wash over your eyes, at the beginning say or think: “I am wiping off all the negative karmas, obscurations and blindness so I am able to achieve the omniscient eye.”

At the end, think that you have achieved this. So do a strong motivation at the beginning and the end.

Also your parents can pray and you can pray, as I have said the prayer, in this way. Your parents can pray and also you can pray, so please do this.
