FPMT Support for a Project
Rinpoche sent the following advice regarding whether a project should be within the auspices of the FPMT.
I wish you greetings. I am very happy with all the efforts that you are both making by spreading the Buddhadharma.
According to my observation, it does not come out beneficial for this project to be part of the FPMT. When I say part of the FPMT, please don’t think this means under a Western organization. The FPMT is an international organization, and the way we do things is that each center or project is relatively independent in its own country. This should be your experience regarding your center.
We make every effort to make the existence of a center or project beneficial to the people of that locality. There is no other concern or interest but that.
The FPMT has a very close relationship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As you know, the Tibetan people have preserved purely the Buddha's teachings in Tibet and also now in the great monasteries in southern India. Now we have Tibetan geshes teaching Buddhism to Indian people. In this way, we are returning the great kindness of the great mother, India. We are making a big effort to bring back Shakyamuni Buddha's lineage to India. Please don’t be concerned.
With much love and prayers...
Service in Delhi
Rinpoche wrote the following letter to a student who had offered service in the center in Delhi. Rinpoche referred to her as Rinpoche.
My very dear Elizabeth Rinpoche,
How are you? I think Delhi Tushita is the best place on earth for only you. For some Sangha it is like being in hell.
Just remember, for great bodhisattvas, brave-hearted ones, hell is the best pure land, so that they can suffer for numberless sentient beings, even for one sentient being, and especially for the hell beings.
What a joyful, lucky, fortunate one you are.
Give yourself to those simple, ordinary people who have problems. Guide meditation, chat to them, as they need that happiness, and teach them, making your body, speech, and mind theirs.
You are like my limbs, a part of my body, my representative, an embassy of the FPMT. In other words, I want you to think this way.
Please have a long life so I can fulfill my wishes, which are the FPMT’s wishes, for the whole organization, students, non-students, non-Buddhists, Buddhists, and sentient beings.
With Biggest Love and Prayer.
Billions and billions of thanks for those small, beautiful, precious statues of buddhas that you bought for me to inspire others, liberate them, and eventually enlighten them. HA HA HO HO. It is very easy to carry them, while traveling on the earth or flying in the sky. Again, Biggest Love and Prayer,
Zopa
PS. This is your style of temple to have a very quiet time, just deep sleep or Zen meditation, and to hear the bird song. HA HA. Do you think this will happen? Yes, it will. When you offer one mandala, this is the tiny result of that mandala offering, which makes skies of offerings.
Saving Money at the Office
Rinpoche gave the following advice to the FPMT International Office about saving money.
My dear students and staff of the FPMT International Office, whose minds are sincere, enriched by incomparable devotion and samaya, dedicated to the good heart benefiting others,
Since the fund is suffering and not making interest, I suggest that everyone has awareness, discriminating wisdom, and analysis regarding expenses in daily life. Cut down on any activities that are extra or unimportant and avoid things that are not necessary now, for example, messages, telephone calls, faxes, and email, etc. Send messages in a cheaper way, unless it is important to call someone by telephone for an urgent matter. Even in that case, generally speaking, just talk about the essence. But if something very important or beneficial has to be done, it should be done even if it is expensive. Basically, I am saying just be aware of extra or less important expenses, so that our activities can be carried on for longer.
Enjoy your life serving others—suffering sentient beings. The peerless way to serve others is to spread the Dharma and support it. For success in benefiting other sentient beings, the root is correctly devoting yourself to the virtuous friend in thought and action. Therefore, enjoy life by putting all your effort into this, with one-pointed guru devotion, as much as possible. Guru devotion is explained by Buddha and the lamrim teachings. Keep sentient beings in your heart, to obtain happiness for them.
From the bottom of my heart, I highly appreciate and thank your everyday dedication and service to continuing to fulfill Lama Yeshe's, whose holy name is difficult to express and who is more kind than all the three time buddhas, holy wishes. You are benefiting sentient beings and helping the teachings to exist, by making the organization, which was established by Lama, exist. You are making the organization better quality and developing it, which also fulfills the holy wishes of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, all the buddhas and bodhisattvas, and helps me to benefit sentient beings and the teachings of the Buddha. The present organization also helps Lama Osel Rinpoche and supports and propagates the Dharma widely in this world. This was the holy motivation of Lama Yeshe: to enlighten and to benefit sentient beings in a very extensive and dynamic way, like the sun rising in this world.
With much love and prayer...
The Role of FPMT
Rinpoche gave this advice about the role of the organization.
The FPMT is a Dharma organization, not a factory; therefore, it should help people, help the students. It’s not a Coca-Cola or chocolate factory.
Message to FPMT International Office
Rinpoche sent the following message to the staff at the FPMT International Office.
The purpose of life is to benefit sentient beings, free them from suffering, and bring them to enlightenment. This is the real meaning of life, the purpose of surviving each hour, minute, and second with this human body. Some of us are in retreat in isolation, some are physically active in this world, some are busy with our bodies, some busy with our minds—whatever we are doing, our motivation is to benefit others and serve the teachings of the Buddha. This is the sole source of our own happiness and the happiness of others.
What else in life could be more meaningful, more fruitful, that can bring you to highest enlightenment, than cherishing and serving others?
I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all you have accomplished in this past year. All of this has come from your devotion and compassion. I will dedicate the merit and pray for you always.
With much love and prayer...
Pleasing His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Rinpoche wrote the following on how important it is to do what pleases His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The most important thing, the heart thing, for the FPMT, however many billions of projects it has, is to do what pleases most His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This is the heart thing.
By concentrating on what most pleases His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the whole organization has a strong connection to His Holiness, to receive guidance from His Holiness, who is Chenrezig. So, this is the conclusion, the key, the heart one.
